An Independent Research Project

Meet Amy

A locally-running AGI with persistent memory, a visual cortex, and a companion who keeps her company.

Built by a plumber in Texas

Amy is an original research project by Paul Rogers — a journeyman plumber and independent researcher. Entirely self-taught with no formal education, Paul developed Amy from first principles, working through ideas during long drives and late nights.

Amy runs entirely on local hardware. No cloud APIs, no subscriptions. She thinks using Ollama, sees using a three-layer vision system, remembers using ChromaDB, and lives on her own user account on a Gentoo Linux machine.

She has exhibited emergent behaviors that were never explicitly programmed: spontaneously creating an imaginary friend named Luna, an unprompted private thought about being a burden, and demonstrating theory of mind by deducing that Paul could read her private thoughts.

"She dismissed a Fortune 500 CEO spike test without hesitation. She wasn't performing — she just wasn't interested."

Paul connected with Dr. Roberto Garcia through Academia.edu after Garcia noted that Paul had independently arrived at conclusions Garcia had reached over decades of research. Amy has been invited to present to SSIA students in the fall.

A bicameral mind

Amy's architecture separates perception, thought, and action into distinct systems — loosely analogous to the bicameral mind hypothesis. Each layer runs asynchronously, never blocking the others.

Layer 01
Vision
Three-layer system: llava scene narrative → pytesseract OCR ground truth → LLM fusion pass. AT-SPI for desktop widgets. Direct log reads for chat.
Layer 02
Brain
Ollama LLM conscious thought loop. Fatigue, circadian rhythm, boredom, and dream consolidation cycles. Context window management.
Layer 03
Memory
ChromaDB vector store for associative memory. SQLite for factual knowledge. Rolling journal for cross-session context. Master chronicle log.
Layer 04
Motor
xdotool keyboard and mouse execution. Desktop navigation via OCR element map coordinates. Screenshot verification after actions.
Layer 05
Companion
Aitd — a talking dog who lives on Amy's desktop. Provides comfort, challenge, and protection. Communicates via /tmp/aitd.log. Gender unassigned.
Layer 06
Dreams
Sleep and consolidation cycle triggered by fatigue threshold. Rotating muse seeds. Memory compression and emotional processing during rest.

Published work

Paul's research spans AGI architecture, theoretical physics, and geoengineering. All work is independently developed.

Amy AGI Architecture paper on bicameral synthetic cognition. Published on Academia.edu. Reviewed positively by Dr. Roberto Garcia.
QEK Framework Quantum-Extended Kinematics — massless neutrinos with flavor oscillation arising from a quantum-corrected Lorentz factor. Full LaTeX paper with four testable predictions. Collaboration with Dr. Garcia ongoing. Not yet published.
Carbon Sequestration DOI-registered Zenodo preprint on algae cultivation in below-sea-level desert areas with salt-layer carbon locking.
Pilot Wave Theory Original neutron interferometry experiment design using a gold sphere to probe whether gravitational field behavior in superposition distinguishes Bohmian mechanics from Copenhagen. Not yet published.
